Tattoo Aftercare in Bali: Sun, Sea and Pool Tips

Getting tattooed on holiday is a brilliant way to remember your trip – but Bali's sunshine, warm ocean and endless pools are also exactly what a fresh tattoo doesn't love. The good news? With a bit of planning, you can look after your new ink and still enjoy the island.

These are general tips to help you plan. The most important rule of all: follow the aftercare instructions your tattoo studio gives you. Every tattoo, placement and skin type is different, and your artist will tailor advice to your piece. If you're ever concerned about how your tattoo is healing, speak to a doctor or pharmacist.

Why Aftercare Matters More on Holiday

A fresh tattoo is a healing wound. At home, keeping it clean and covered is fairly easy. In Bali you're dealing with strong tropical sun, humidity, sweat, sand, salt water and chlorinated pools – plus the temptation to jump straight in. Good aftercare helps protect both your skin and the look of your tattoo for years to come.

Plan Your Tattoo Around Your Trip

The simplest aftercare tip happens before you're even tattooed: timing.

  • Get tattooed towards the end of your stay if swimming and surfing are a big part of your plans. Enjoy the water first, then get inked.
  • Leave a few easy days after your session if you're tattooing earlier – think cafés, spas (no soaking), shopping and sightseeing in the shade.
  • Talk to your artist about placement. Some areas are easier to keep out of the sun and away from friction than others.

If you're still choosing a studio, our guide to getting a tattoo in Bali covers what to look for.

Sun: Your New Tattoo's Biggest Enemy

The Bali sun is strong year-round, and fresh ink is especially sensitive.

  • Keep it covered and in the shade while it heals. Loose, breathable clothing is your best friend.
  • Don't apply sunscreen to a fresh, unhealed tattoo unless your studio advises it – check your aftercare instructions first.
  • Once healed, use sunscreen to help keep your tattoo looking crisp. Sun exposure over time can fade ink.
  • Avoid sunbaking and hot afternoons by the pool while you heal.

Sea and Surf: Hold Off for Now

We know – it's hard to be in Bali and stay out of the ocean. But it's generally recommended to avoid swimming while a tattoo is healing.

  • Avoid soaking your tattoo in the sea until your artist says it's healed.
  • Sand can irritate a healing tattoo, so take care at the beach and keep the area covered.
  • Board rash and wax can rub on fresh ink – another reason to plan surf days around your session.

Pools, Spas and Baths

Pools are everywhere in Bali, from villas to beach clubs, but chlorinated water, spas and baths aren't kind to a healing tattoo.

  • Skip swimming pools, hot tubs and baths until your tattoo is healed.
  • Short showers are fine for most people – gently wash as your aftercare instructions describe and pat dry with a clean towel.
  • Rinse with bottled water after your shower. Bali's tap water isn't the same as what you're used to at home, so at Mr Ink Bali we advise rinsing your tattoo with bottled water after showering, then patting it dry with a clean towel.
  • Be careful with villa towels and sheets – use clean ones and avoid letting the area stick to fabric.

Heat, Humidity and Sweat

Tropical humidity means more sweat, which can make your skin feel sticky and irritated.

  • Wear loose, clean clothing that won't rub.
  • Stay cool and stay hydrated.
  • Avoid intense workouts or long, sweaty activities for a few days if your studio recommends it.
  • Keep the area clean following your studio's directions.

Everyday Aftercare Basics

Your studio's instructions come first, but common general guidance includes:

  • Wash your hands before touching your tattoo.
  • Don't pick or scratch – flaking and itching are a normal part of healing for many people.
  • Use only the products your studio recommends.
  • Don't let anyone else touch it – tempting as it is to show it off.

Flying Home With a Fresh Tattoo

If you're flying home soon after your session, wear loose clothing over the area, keep it clean and bring any aftercare products your studio recommends in your carry-on (within airline limits).
